BNP leader Aslam remanded

A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed BNP leader Mohammad Aslam Chowdhury on a one-day remand in a case filed with Ramna Police Station over 2013 mayhem of Hefazat-e-Islam in Dhaka.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Asaduzzaman Noor on Wednesday rejected the bail plea and granted a one-day remand after a hearing.

On May 31, Ramna Police Inspector (Operations) Mohammad Mahfuzul Haque applied for a 10-day remand for accused Aslam Chowdhury.

In the remand application, he said that the remand is required to know the names and addresses of those who were involved in the incident. The court fixed June 30 for the hearing in the presence of the accused.

It may be mentioned that on May 5, 2013, leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, Chhatra Shibir, BNP and Hefazat-e-Islam laid siege to Dhaka. In the name of blockade, they vandalized and set fire to vehicles and public and private installations in the surrounding areas of the capital including Motijheel, Paltan, Dainik Bangla Mor and Arambagh with sticks, sharp weapons and firearms. Police filed multiple cases against Hefazat-e-Islam, Jamaat, Chhatra Shibir and BNP leaders and activists at Ramna, Paltan and Motijheel police stations after that incident.
