Central hospital authorities blame Dr Saha

The Central Hospital authorities on Monday admitted their negligence and blamed Dr Sangjukta Saha in the treatment of Mahbuba Rahman Ankhi, who along with her new born baby died due to alleged wrong treatment at the hospital.

At the same time, the authorities expressed their grief over the deaths.

Dr ATM Nazrul Islam, senior deputy director of the hospital, said: “Dr Sangjukta Saha, the hospital’s gynecologist, is responsible for the situation. It is because of her that this situation has been created today.”

He said these things while responding to reporters at Central Hospital in the afternoon.

Nazrul Islam said: “There was definitely negligence in the treatment. First of all, this negligence was from the side of Dr Sangjukta Saha, then from the side of the doctors of OT (operation theatre). At that time they did not call any senior doctors. Though they are now saying that they failed to reach any senior doctors over the phone. “

Nazrul Islam said: “We have formed an investigation committee in this incident. The report is due within seven working days. Five days have already passed, and two days are left. We hope that it will be possible to publish the investigation report within this period.”

In response to a question whether any action has been taken against anyone by the hospital, he said, “Our investigation is not over yet. We will take action when the investigation report comes.”

He said: “One thing is clear that this incident happened today because of Dr Sangjukta Saha. He sees so many patients at once. If she cleared it from the beginning that she would not stay in the hospital that day, the patients might not have been admitted under her. We had more consultants, or patients went elsewhere. The situation is because of her.”

ATM Nazrul Islam claimed that she did not inform the hospital authorities that Dr Saha would not be in the hospital that day.

He further said: “If we had known that he was not at work, we would have arranged alternative doctors for her patients. But she left the country without informing the hospital authorities. So we think this incident happened because of her. Even those who gave information to patients are not hospital staff. They are personal assistants of Dr Saha, so the responsibility is entirely Dr Sangjukta Saha.”

Mahbuba Rahman Akhi, whose newborn died due to alleged wrong treatment at Dhaka’s Central Hospital on June 9, passed away while undergoing treatment at the nearby Labaid hospital on Sunday.

Earlier, she was admitted to Central Hospital under the supervision of Professor Dr Sangjukta Saha on June 9.

Later, on June 14, her husband Yakub Ali complained of “wrong treatment” and “deception” by the authorities at Central Hospital. He claimed that their newborn child died due to the negligence of the hospital authorities.

After the incident, Akhi was admitted to Labaid Hospital where she died at 1:43pm on Sunday.
