Charge framed against ex-Telco official over fraudulence

A Dhaka court on Tuesday framed charged against ASM Ashraf, a former high-ranking official of a leading Telecom Operator of the country, for illegally and fraudulently living with a woman for two and a half years in pretence of marriage.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor gave the order on Tuesday (March 7).

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a report to the court on September 15 last year. The report finds preliminary evidence against the accused under Section 493 of the Penal Code.

According to Section 493 of the Penal Code states that cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully including a belief of lawful marriage with a woman under the pretense of a lawful marriage is punishable with rigorous imprisonment for a term up to 10 years and with fine.

While talking to this Victim, she said that, I am glad that the charged formed against Ashraf and hopeful to get justice in the court.

“However, the criminal is influential and may try to influence the trial the same way he did at PBI. He has good connection with top-notch and can manipulate anybody. Already he manipulated PBI in another case on embezzlement of Tk. 75 lakh during investigation. On that case PBI gave final report mentioning that it was false and harassment case by Investigation Officer Sohel Rana, a Sub-Inspector of PBI Kalyanpur Branch’ the victim added her concern.

It is noted that after accepting the dissatisfaction application of the victim the court has cognizance the case. Already charge has been framed against the accused ASM Ashraf, his uncle Feroze Rayhan and cousin Md. Refeuzzaman in that case. However, the accused submitted discharge petition to the court but their petition was dismissed during charge hearing. 

The court is scheduled to take statement of the witness on 3rd April, 2023.
