Counter anti-govt propaganda on social media: PM asks BCL

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday asked Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and activists to counter anti-government propaganda on social media, raising there the misdeeds of BNP-Jamaat.”We’ve made Digital Bangladesh. But today social media has been flooded with propagandas against us. I would like to ask our Chhatra League leaders and activists that you all have to give fitting replies to these,” she said.

The premier was addressing the 30th national council of BCL, the student wing of Bangladesh Awami League, at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan here in the capital.”When they write something against us, you don’t even need to give a reply. If only their misdeeds can be put in the comment (of propaganda), they will stop it,” she added.

Hasina, also the AL president, inaugurated the council at around 11:30am.Former BCL president and AL general secretary Obaidul Quader spoke on this occasion.BCL president Al-Nahean Khan Joy presided over the opening session conducted by its general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee. The last BCL national council was held in May 2018.

There’s money in every bank: The prime minister said rumours are being spread that there is no money in the banks. “But we’ve no problem by the grace of Allah. There is money in every bank,” she said, asking all not to heed the rumours. She said a quarter is there who want to mislead the people resorting to falsehood. They are experts in lies. “We’ve made Digital Bangladesh. But they use it against us,” she added.

Hasina slammed a section of dignitaries and intellectuals who have joined hands with BNP to oust the government.”Our many knowledgeable persons and dignitaries have joined hands with the BNP and they make us to hear their lectures on democracy. Many, however, say that they are not intellectuals rather intellectually disabled,” she said.

The PM said they (intellectuals) join hands with them (BNP) to oust the government, accepting as their leader a convicted person who was sentenced on charges of August 21 grenade attack, money laundering and arms smuggling. “My question is why this attempt is made to snatch away the rights of people by joining hands with such mischiefs,” she said.

“What is the offense of AL?” she asked, highlighting her government’s successes and steps for the development of different sectors of the country. The premier said there is only one instance of peaceful change in power in the history of Bangladesh and it is Awami League who did it in 2001.

“Awami League believes in democracy and the power of people. So AL handed over the power in a peaceful manner,” she said, criticizing Khaleda Zia for holding the election on February 15, 1996 where no voter turned up.

But Khaleda was forced to step down in face of public movement after that lopsided election, she said, adding that now BNP leaders should remember it false allegations are made against us. Why are you going to rig votes? The people vote for us spontaneously,” said the AL president.

PM Hasina urged the students including BCL members to groom themselves as worthy citizens of Bangladesh so that they can contribute to the continuation of the current development spree of the country.”Students will have to be worthy citizens of Bangladesh, concentrating on studies properly so that this development trend of Bangladesh would continue,” she said.

She asked the BCL leaders and activists to create public opinion so that the killers and anti-liberation forces including razakars, Al-Badr and war criminals couldn’t come to power anymore in this country.”I want our leaders and activists to be developed in such a way that none can wipe out the spirit of the country’s independence and the history of the Liberation War,” she said.

The PM asked the meritorious students in the BCL to pursue study properly including technical education and sit for PSC examination as an efficient administration is needed to govern the country. “Yes, we need politics. But at the same time we need efficient administration and technical education,” she said.

Hasina appreciated BCL members for standing beside the people in every tough time particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent flood in Sylhet region.
