Country is walking the path of North Korea: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party said on Sunday that Bangladesh was walking the path of North Korea to establish one-party rule.

‘What is going on in Bangladesh now is one-party rule. Bangladesh is walking on the path of North Korea. But it will not be implemented,’ BNP standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan said at a discussion.

A Gono Forum faction and Bangladesh People’s Party jointly organised the discussion titled ‘Cancellation of illegal parliament in dummy farce one-sided elections and institutionalisation of non-partisan neutral government’ at the National Press Club.

He said that the BNP was not doing politics for power but to return people’s rights, which would ensure the restoration of democracy in the country through peaceful movement.

‘If we want to maintain democracy, then we have to struggle every moment. We are engaged in that struggle. So there is nothing to be disappointed,’ he said.

‘Maybe our expectations were high on January 7, but we could not achieve that on that day. What is there to be disappointed in? This movement is not easy. One of the most important aspects of this movement is that our power is the power of the people, the power of justice,’ he added.

He said that the government did not have the knowledge and dignity to understand that they had killed the democracy of Bangladesh today. There can be no greater grief than this.

‘A recognised method around the world is the black flag march, a language of protest. We used the language of peaceful protest. This is the language we will continue to use until this government goes morally bankrupt and defeated. Our peaceful movement will continue on the streets,’ he said.

The BNP leader said that about 35 cases have been filed against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. When the BNP was in power, there was no case against the Awami League president.

‘Awami League is now claiming that BNP has oppressed them. But they could not give an account of what they did wrong. BNP does not do what the Awami League does,’ he said.

Chaired by Gono Forum president MostafaMohsinMontu, Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary SaifulHuq, GanosamhatiAndolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki, GonoOdhikarParishad president NurulHaqueNur, BhashaniAnusariParishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, and National People’s Party chairman FariduzzamanFarhad also spoke at the discussion, among others.
