Advocate Nahid and Tanvir Ahsan, who were arrested for torturing a domestic worker from Topkhana Road in the capital, were sent to jail by a Dhaka court.
On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahinur Rahman denied their bail plea and ordered them to be sent to jail.
Shahbagh police sub-inspector Jahangir Hossain produced the accused before the court under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code and asked them to be kept in jail. On the other hand, the defendants applied for bail. After hearing from both sides, the court sent them to jail cancelling their bail application.
According to the complaint, the 12-year-old Sweety’s house is in Nawabpur village of Mithamoin police station in Kishoreganj district. Her poor parents forced her to work as a housemaid at the couple’s home on Topkhana Road in the capital. She has been working there for 9 months.
Almost every day she was beaten by the advocate couple on various pretexts. Sweety has bruises under her eyes, serious injuries to her hands.
Last Saturday night, a neighbor posted some pictures on Facebook with signs of torture on the girl’s body, urging quick help and legal actions. The matter came to the notice of the police and the accused Nahid was arrested from his father’s house on Saturday night.
The petition further said that the guardians of the victim has been informed and further legal action will be taken after receiving their complaint.
