Daughter along with boyfriend killed mother

Former Awami League lawmaker Shamsuddoha Khan Majlish’s wife Selima Khan Majlish was killed by their eldest daughter and her boyfriend.

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) revealed the matter at a press conference in Dhaka on Tuesday, solving the mystery of the murder that took place 13 years ago in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital.

The victim was killed as she opposed an illicit relationship between her daughter Shamima Khan Popy, now 57, and Subol Kumar Roy, now 50, an electrician by profession, said PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumder.

Besides, there was a feud over property between the mother and the daughter, he said.

Selima with her daughters – Popy, a widow, Tilottoma, Shilpi, and only son Plabon lived at their two-storey house in Savar, Banaj said.

The husbands of Tilottoma and Shilpi also lived with them.

On 14 June 2011 morning, Selima was found in a pool of blood as she was stabbed in her throat and stomach with a sharp weapon.

She was first rushed to Enam Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) where she succumbed to her injuries on 18 June that year.

On 15 June, Shafiur Rahman Khan Shafi, brother of the victim, filed a case against unknown people with Savar Model Police Station under the Penal Code sections – 326/307/34. After her death, Section 302 was added to the case.

The then sub-inspector (SI) of the police station, Sheikh Farid, investigated the case and arrested Abul Kalam Azad, grandson-in-law of the deceased, and Haripada Sarkar, husband of domestic help Saraswati.

Later, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigated the case and submitted a final report (true) – which means the incident was a murder, but the killers could not be identified – before a Dhaka court on 18 October 2015, dropping the names of Azad and Haripada from the report.

The plaintiff revived the case and the court ordered the PBI to investigate it. In February this year, PBI Dhaka district unit’s SI Imran Ahmed was assigned to investigate the murder.

On 30 May, the investigating officer (IO) arrested Subol in Savar and on 3 June, he gave a statement before a Dhaka court confessing his involvement in the murder.

According to the statement, Subol knifed Selima with the help of Popy at the dining room of the victim’s house at some time between 6:30am and 7:30am.

Based on the statement, the PBI arrested Popy and one Aroti Sarkar, who knew about the murder, in Savar on 4 June.

Late Awami League lawmaker Shamsuddoha Khan Majlish was the president of the party’s Dhaka district unit.
