Default loans jumps 7.29pc in Sept qtr

The non-performing loans (NPLs) in the country’s banking sector rose by Tk 9,139 crore, 7.29 percent in three months to September 30 this year, banking sources said. The amount of NPL at the end of September 2022 stood at Tk 134,396 crore, which was Tk 125,257 at the end of June of this year. The outstanding loans of the banking sector stood at Tk 1,436,199.82 crore at the end of September, and NPLs made up 9.36 percent of the total loans.

BB data showed the default loans at the state-run commercial banks stood at Tk 60,501.84 crore at the end of September, which was Tk 55,429 crore in June. The amount NPLs was Tk 66,695.50 crore at the private commercial banks in September end, which was Tk 62,678 crore at the end of June 22. Besides, non-performing loans of specialized banks stood at Tk 4,227.98 crore in September, up from Tk 4,194 crore at the end of June.

The amount of default loans at the foreign banks stood at Tk 2,970.79 crore at the end of September, which was Tk 2,956.91 crore in June. BB data also showed that the volume of non-performing loans in the country’s financial sector surged by Tk 31,000 crore in the first nine months of 2022. The highest amount of default loans worth Tk 20,339 crore at the end of September was with the state-run Janata Bank.

Ahsan H Mansur, Executive Director of Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRIB), told The News Times that effective steps should be taken to reduce default loans, which is growing day by day. He was also suspicious about the default loan and said the actual amount would be much higher.
