Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in a case of crimes against humanity, has passed away (innalillahi wa inna ilahi rajioon).
He died while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) on Monday (August 14) at 8:40 PM.
The death was confirmed by the professor of cardiology department of the hospital. Mustafa Zaman.
Earlier, he was brought to BSMMU from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur at 10:40 PM on Sunday.
On June 29, 2010, Sayeedi was arrested from his Shaheen Bagh residence in the capital on charges of hurting religious sentiments. Later on August 2, he was arrested in a case of crimes against humanity.
It should be noted that during the liberation war, when eight charges of crimes against humanity including murder, abduction, torture, rape, arson, looting, conversion were proved, the International Criminal Tribunal ordered the death penalty for Sayeedi on two charges.
Following a later appeal, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment on 17 September 2014. He is currently serving sentence in that case.
