Don’t threaten people of Gazipur: Jahangir to AL leaders

Suspended Gazipur City Corporation mayor Jahangir Alam has urged central Awami League leaders to stop “threatening the people of Gazipur.”

He was speaking to reporters at his residence in Gazipur on Tuesday.

Regarding his mother Zayda Khatun, who is running for mayor in the upcoming GCC polls, Jahangir said: “My mother is a resilient woman who is prepared for the election. Since birth, my mother has taught me to be part of Chhatra League and Awami League. With that knowledge, I have worked for the Awami League in Gazipur.”

“When I was elected mayor, regardless of party affiliation, everyone in the city did their job. After serving as mayor for three long years no people of Gazipur made any complaints against me. But then one man spoke against me.”

“Even though my fellow leader showed support towards me, none explained or provided the actual information to the prime minister. All the work I did while being the mayor was done in accordance with government rules. Even then, my mayoral post was cancelled or suspended,” he added.

Jahangir expressed his disappointment at not being allowed even two minutes to explain his side to Awami League President Sheikh Hasina or General Secretary Obaidul Quader.

He said the Awami League nominated mayoral candidate Azmat Ullah was involved in harming him.

On his expulsion from the party, Jahangir said: “I am a supporter of the Awami League. Why would you need a central committee to expel a supporter? I would request you to accommodate me as a supporter of the party – not for power or position.”

“I am with my mother to establish the truth of the injustice done to me,” he mentioned.

In response to whether he is concerned about EVM use in the GCC election, Jahangir said everyone will be able to see whether EVMs are good or bad on election day, May 25.
