Driver of SUV arrested for killing 3 in Khilkhet

Police arrested the driver of the sport utility vehicle (SUV) that crashed into a passenger shed under the Khilkhet foot over bridge in the capital on Wednesday night, killing three people, including a child.

Enamul Haque Khandaker, inspector (investigation) of Khilkhet Police Station, said that a team of police arrested driver of the vehicle, Dishan, aged around 30 years, from Khilkhet area early Thursday.

In primary interrogation, the driver told police that he was feeling unwell and believed he could navigate the area safely.

However, he could not and ended up causing the accident, he said.

The accident took place near ‘Khilkhet Bazar Jatri Chhauni’ at around 9pm after a speedy SUV lost control and ran over four pedestrians. Soon after the incident, the vehicle was seized, but its driver fled the spot.

The deceased were identified as Yasin, 8, Amrina Haque, 27, and Ujjal Pandey, 26, a private company employee from Bhatara.

The child died on the spot and three others were injured. The injured were rescued and taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared two of them dead.

Yasin’s father Sumon, 35, is undergoing treatment at the DMCH.

Husband of the victim Armina filed a case with Khilkhet police station in this regard, said Officer-in-Charge of the police station Sheikh Aminul Bashar. He said the driver was shown arrested in this case.

The bodies were handed over to the relatives without autopsy following an appeal by the families of the deceased, he added.
