DUET students protest on indiscriminate tree cutting

Students Dhaka University of Engeneering and Technology (DUET) formed a human chain protesting the indiscriminate tree cutting at DUET campus and Punishment of those who involved in these activities at DUET Shaheed Minar premises on Tuesday.

The students also sent a memorandum to the vice-chancellor of the university demanding punishment of the culprits within the next seven working days.

Chief Engineer of the university, Mamunur Rahman said, “this tree was cut down because it was risky and it was cut through the auction committee.”

Swapan Prince, a student of textile engineering department, said, “We appealed to the chief engineer but he has not given us any information after 3 days. He could not show any specific reason for cutting the tree. The university administration did not even take permission from the authority to cut the tree in the hall.

Student Imran Sarkar said, “The tree provided shade when it was sunny and was a habitat for many birds. It is not right to cut the tree like this.”

The students participating in the human chain said that when they asked the VC sir about the cutting of the tree, the VC sir said that I asked them to cut the tree.

But he did not answer why it was cut down. There are 50 more trees there. I don’t know why 1 tree was cut down. No road, structure, building will be built there, so why were the trees cut down?
