End indigenous versus settler issue in CHT, ensure equal rights for all: AB Party

The AB Party condemned all extrajudicial killings and mob violence in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, calling for an end to the use of divisive terms like hills-plains.

“Our history and anthropology do not support this Western settler-colonial approach. Bengalis are not settlers; they are part of this delta or region for thousands of years,” said the AB party in a press conference, held in the capital on Sunday.

Refugees from the Indian state of Tripura, Cambodia, and Burma cannot be considered as indigenous people. This flawed approach would rather create more division and instability among the communities, said AB Party.

Speaking at a press conference Asaduzzaman Fuaad, a barrister-at-law and Joint Member Secretary of AB Party, highlighted that any criminal, regardless of background, should be brought to justice.

He emphasized the state’s duty to protect human rights without exception. The AB Party criticized previous governments for failing to achieve lasting peace in the hill tracts and called on the interim government to ensure a political solution through community participation.

Prof. Dr. Abdul Wahab Minar, a retired army major and Joint Convenor of the party, expressed hope that the interim government would take a more sincere approach to solving these issues.
