A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced e-commerce platform Evaly’s Managing Director and CEO Mohammad Rassel and Chairman Shamima Nasrin to three years of imprisonment each in a cheque fraud case.
Judge of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court Md Minhazur Rahman pronounced the judgment and fined them Tk 5, 000 each, in default of which, they have to suffer six more months’ jail, said the defendant’s lawyer Sakibul Islam.
The court issued an arrest warrant for the convicts as they were tied in absentia.
According to the case statement, Evaly used to sell various products through flashy advertisements through various means.
Attracted by this, a buyer Mujahid Hasan Fahim ordered a Yamaha motorbike on February 20, 2021 and paid its price accordingly.
However, the authorities failed to deliver the bike within 45 days, forcing the buyer to contact the organization’s Dhanmondi office.
After failing, the Evaly authority handed over a cheque of Tk 5 lakh and requested him not to deposit the check on the due date, citing the shortage of money in the bank account.
Believing it, the victim refrained from depositing the cheque.
Despite repeated pressures, the authority did not return any money to him.
In January last year, the victim filed a case against the duo on charge of deception.
Earlier on January 29 in 2024, a court sentenced Rassel and Shamima to two years of imprisonment each in a fraud case.
