Four workers sustain burns in Shyampur transformer explosion

Four factory workers sustained burn injuries in a steel mill transformer explosion in Shyampur area of the capital on Tuesday evening.

The incident took place inside the gate of Salam Steel Mill in Shyampur area around 7.30pm on Tuesday. Locals rescued the burn victims and admitted them to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS).

Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Police Camp In-charge (OC) Md Bachchu Mia said that the injured in the explosion were identified as- Akaeed, 25, Md Roni, 29, Sunil Chandra Roy, 40, and Ratan, 35.

SHNIBPS resident surgeon Dr SM Ayub Hossain told BSS that, “Four people from Shyampur came to the hospital with ‘electric burn’. Among them, two workers named Roni and Akaid sustained five percent burns on their bodies and were discharged after given first aid.”

“Among the remaining two, Rony received 25 percent burn injuries while Sunil sustained 22 percent and are admitted to the hospital….their physical condition is critical,” the medical officer added.

According to Shyampur Thana police, Kalam Steel Mill workers and officials have said that a transformer suddenly exploded around 7:30 pm on Tuesday.

Shortly after the blast, hot inflammable material fell on the workers standing under the transformer.
