Haji Salim to surrender to court on May 16

Ruling Awami League MP Haji Mohammad Salim, convicted of 10 years’ imprisonment in a corruption case, will surrender to a lower court in Dhaka on May 16 next, said his lawyer Sayeed Ahmed Raja on Thursday.

Apart from surrendering to a lower court, Haji Salim will appeal against the High Court verdict.

Being convicted in a graft case, Haji Salim left Dhaka for Bangkok in the name of treatment ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr secretly. However, he returned home from Bangkok at 12:15pm on Thursday.

He landed in Dhaka by a Thai Airways flight, his personal secretary Mohiuddin Mahmud Belal said.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal faced a volly of questions over Haji Salim issue after opening of the offices following the Eid vacation.

Instead of making any specific explanation, the Home Minister said, “Haji Salim has returned to the country in accordance with the law after going abroad.”

After reaching Dhaka, Haji Salim went to Azimpur Graveyard and offered prayers at the graves of his family members.

On Saturday (April 29), Haji Salim left Dhaka for Bangkok for medical treatment.

He has been at the risk of losing his membership of parliament since the High Court confirmed his 10-year jail term in March 2021 in an illegal wealth accumulation case filed one and a half decades ago.

Parliament has not yet decided on his membership.
