Kamal Uddin Chowdhury, former Executive President (Managing Director) of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC (IBBL) and eminent banker, passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un).
He passed away on 8 January at 3:00 PM while undergoing treatment at Islami Bank Central Hospital. At the time of his death, he was 82 years old. He left behind his wife, a daughter, relatives, and numerous admirers.
He joined Islami Bank in 1989 as an Executive Vice President. Before joining Islami Bank, he served as Deputy General Manager and Head of the International Division at Agrani Bank. His career began in 1963 as a probationary officer at the then Habib Bank Limited. After retiring from Islami Bank, he held several significant positions, including Chairman of Islamic Commercial Insurance, Independent Director of Al-Arafah Islami Bank, Managing Director of Shahjalal Islami Bank PLC, and Shahjalal Islami Bank Securities Limited. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Trustee Board of South East University, Director of Ahsania Mission Cancer & General Hospital, and Director of Hajj Finance. He also played key roles in promoting Islamic banking as Chairman of the Task Committee of the Islamic Bank Consultative Forum and other different capacities.
His first Janazah (funeral prayer) will be held on 9 January after Zuhr at the south gate of Baitul Mukarram, the second Janazah at 3:00 PM at the South East University campus, the third Janazah after Esha at Bailey Road, and the fourth Janazah on Friday, January 10, after Jumu’ah in Kattali, Chattogram, followed by his burial in his hometown.
On his passing, Obayed Ullah Al Masud, Chairman and Mohammed Monirul Moula, Managing Director of the bank, expressed their condolences. Additionally, special prayers for his forgiveness were organized at the bank’s head office, zonal offices and branches on behalf of the Islami Bank family.
