Issuing threat of halting election unconstitutional: CEC

BNP and its like-minded political parties are not only abstaining from participating in the 12th parliamentary election but also issuing threats of resistance, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has said.

“Such type of threat is blatantly unconstitutional,” the CEC said during an inclusive interview with Voice of America (VOA bangla) on Tuesday.

A day after the interview, BNP on Wednesday coincidentally announced a noncooperation movement against the government in a bid to foil the 12th parliamentary election scheduled for January 7.

In response to a question about whether he would resign if the election is not acceptable at home and abroad, he did not provide any clear answer.

However, he expressed his optimism about the election being held in a free, fair and transparent manner.

There is no scope to raise any question about the impartiality of the election, he said, adding that the commission is bound by the constitutional obligation to arrange the election within the appropriate time frame.

Responding to another query over the new visa policy of the United States, he said he is not concerned about it.
