Jamaat asks to investigate if an AL leader, his men are behind unrest in garment sector

–Expressing deep concern over the ongoing unrest in the readymade garment industry, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday asked the authorities to look into whether an Awami League leader and his men are acting as instigators behind the incidents.
Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar in a statement said that Dhaka North City AL general secretary SM Mannan Kochi grabbed the president post of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently, though it is said that he does not even have a garment factory of his own.
He claimed that Kochi was directly involved in the indiscriminate killings and repression against students and general people in Mirpur and Uttara during the recent revolution.
“In such a situation, I call on the law enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies of the country to investigate whether Kochi and the current (BGMEA) board appointed by him are playing a behind-the-scenes role or working as instigators behind this ongoing worker unrest,” he said.
Parwar made the statement to express his party’s grave concern over the ongoing unrest in the readymade garment industry due to the demonstrations and vandalism in Ashulia and Gazipur.
Noting that they are closely monitoring the ongoing unrest and workers’ dissatisfaction in the country’s garment industry, he said, “The instability in this sector will in no way have a positive impact on the country’s economy and anyone concerned,” he added.
“In addition, all our competitors including our neighboring country will get the scope to destroy our garment industry and hatch conspiracies to do so taking this advantage (of the unrest). As a result it will be very easy for them to capture our market and they will benefit from it,” said the Jamaat leader.
The Jamaat secretary general requested the labour bodies working in the garment sector to identify the miscreant quarter or group, who are plotting to destabilize the country and the sector, using the name of workers and workers’ bodies, and hand them over to the law enforcement agencies.
