A murder case has been filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and six others over the death of grocery shop owner Abu Sayeed in police firing in Mohammadpur area in the capital on 19 July.A Mohammadpur resident named Amir Hamza Shatil filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury.
Confirming the matter, Advocate Md Mamun Miah on Tuesday said the other accused are- Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DB chief Harun Or Rashid, former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman and former DMP joint commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker.
Besides, several unnamed high police officials and government officials have also been made accused in the case, the advocate said.
In his lawsuit, Amir said that Abu Sayeed was killed at around 4:00 pm on July 19, when police were firing indiscriminately at students and civilians during the quota reform protests. Police opened fire on people on the orders of the IGP and the then home minister.The victim’s family members reside in Boda upazila, Panchagarh district. In his complaint, Amir said that the family is unable to pursue a lawsuit over the victim’s death.
