7 Homeland Life Insurance directors held for non-payment of claims

Seven directors of the Homeland Life Insurance Co. Ltd were arrested on charge of non-payment of claims by the customers creating huge sensation in the insurance sector of Bangladesh, police sources said.

The accused company directors are Abdur Rob, Jamal Uddin, Kamal Mia, AbdurRazzaque, Jamal Mia, Abdul Hai and FoyzulHaque. They were all sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

On Monday, their bail application was rejected by the court.

The sources said four insurance agents of the company from Magura district filed the cases against the seven directors of the company for not paying insurance claims worth Tk 14 lakh. In the statement of the case, they claim themselves as the customers of the company.

The plaintiff in the case (Case No-227/22), Azar Ali, an insurance agent of Homeland and a policy holder as well, filed the case on August 2. All 19 witnesses in this case are insurance customers.

Azar Ali said, “Our policy expired a long time ago. But the company is not paying. We have repeatedly contacted the company officials. But they didn’t respond. So I was forced to file a case. We have good reputation in the society. So the customers have bought insurance policies from us.”

Another case was filed by the plaintiff Naib Ali (Case No. 228/22). Naib Ali owes Tk 10,506 (Policy No.– A-4500002609-6) from the Homeland Life Insurance Company. There are 15 witnesses in this case. They are all insurance customers.

Another case (Case No-229/22) was filed by Syed Mofakkar Ali Rintu, another agent, against the directors of the company for an insurance claim of about Tk 4.5 lakh. A total of 39 customers were the witnesses in the case. The amount owed by 23 customers has not been given in the statement of the case.

Syed Mofakkar Ali Rintu said, “While working at Homeland Life, I have created hundreds of customers. Many of them got money. Earlier customers were getting money properly but now they are not getting money anymore. I left the homeland without being able to refund the customers.”

Another agent Habibur Rahman filed the case for not paying Tk 567,858 worth of insurance claims.
