North South University’s (NSU) Center for Research on the Liberation War and the Department of History and Philosophy organized a discussion titled “Language Movement and the Emergence of Bangladesh: Reflections from Memoirs and Autobiographies” at the university’s Syndicate Hall on February 19, 2025.
The event was presided over by NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury. Abdul Hye Sikder, editor of the Daily Jugantor, attended as the keynote speaker, while Dr. Saleh Shahriar, Assistant Professor of the Department of History and Philosophy, presented the main paper.
Delivering the welcome address, Professor Rizwanul Islam, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, said, “The Language Movement of 1952 was the starting point of the Bengali nation’s identity. This very spirit laid the foundation for the emergence of Bangladesh. We have also witnessed a similar consciousness during the recent mass uprising of 2024.”
Presenting the keynote paper, Dr. Saleh Shahriar offered a unique perspective on historical narratives. “In my presentation, I have sought to move beyond linear historical narratives and introduce a new conceptual framework focusing on memory studies. History is never one-dimensional; it is layered, with multiple narratives emerging from different contexts,” he explained.
Poet Abdul Hye Sikder, the chief discussant, remarked, “In recent years, speaking the truth in our country has been challenging. However, the situation has significantly improved. The courageous role played by North South University’s students during the July uprising inspires us to speak the truth today. Their actions in July were a source of motivation for all of us.”
Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said, “Today’s discussion has provided valuable insights into crucial historical events such as the Language Movement and the emergence of Bangladesh. It will certainly inspire students to engage deeply with history.”
In conclusion, Professor Abdur Rob Khan, NSU’s Treasurer and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (IC), expressed gratitude to all participants and formally closed the session. Professor Mahbubur Rahman, Chair of the Department of History and Philosophy at NSU, moderated the event.
