Police arrested a person on charge of selling counterfeit cigarettes in Bhatara area of the capital on Thursday night, a press release said Saturday.
According to the police, they got information that a person named Abdul Kahar was staying in front of Alam General Store to sell counterfeit cigarettes in Darjibari area.
Police went to the spot and arrested Kahar. They also seized counterfeit cigarettes of British American Tobacco’s Benson & Hedges, Star, Hollywood, and Pilot brands from Kahar, said Rajan Kumar Saha, Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Badda Zone.
It was known that Abdul Kahar supplied these illegal cigarettes to various shops.
Counterfeit and illegal cigarettes are spreading in different areas of the country including the capital in recent times. The industry stakeholders sought cooperation of law enforcing agencies in this regard.
Rajan Kumar also said a total 38 packets of counterfeit cigarettes kept inside a shopping bag were seized from Kahar. The market price of seized cigarettes is around Tk 6,000.
A case was filed against Kahar at Bhatara police station in this connection.
