Six get life-term jail for 2006 murder of man in Sylhet

A court in Sylhet on Sunday sentenced six people to life imprisonment for killing a man in 2006.

The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default, they will have to serve one more year of rigorous imprisonment, said Court bench assistant Md Kabir Hossain.

Judge Shayla Sharmin of Sylhet Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-4 handed down the judgment on Sunday.

Additionally, one accused was awarded a one-year sentence, while five others were acquitted due to lack of evidence.

The individual with a one-year sentence was fined Tk 5,000, in default, he will have to serve three more months in prison.

The lifers are- Muhammad Ali (45) son of late Ganu Mia of Jamalpur village of Balaganj upazila of Sylhet, Saber Ahmad (24) son of late Taufiq Mia of the same area, his brother Juber Ahmad (26), Afiq Mia (30) son of late Rafiq Mia, Suhail son of Akhlis, Shamim Chowdhury (35) son of Lala Mia.

Those acquitted from the case are Shahid Ali, son of Monir Ali of Jamalpur village in Balaganj, Mafiq (26), son of late Rafiq Mia, Qaiyum (22), son of late Abdul Hamid of the same area, Amarjan Bibi (22), wife of Saleh Ahmed, and Tajammul Ali, 40, son of late Rois Ali.

A person sentenced to one year is identified as Intaj, 40, the son of the late Gani Intaj. Among them, all are absconding except Muhammad Ali.

According to the prosecution, on May 12, 2006, Fakhrul Islam, 35, the son of Yusuf Ali from Jamalpur village, left home to offer Jumma prayers. On his way to the mosque, he was attacked by the accused due to a longstanding feud.

When his brother Abdul Noor and sister Dilara Begum came forward, the accused beat them up and seriously injured them.

Later, locals rescued him and took him to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Fakhrul Islam dead.

Following the incident, Fakhrul’s brother, Sirajul Islam, filed a murder case against 14 individuals at Balaganj Police Station.

After the investigation, a charge sheet was submitted to the court on July 28, 2006, accusing all 14 defendants. The trial for this case began on July 1, 2008.
