atiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has resigned from her post 27 days after the Awami League government was toppled on Aug 5.
According to sources from the Bangabhaban, she tendered her resignation to President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Monday.
Sheikh Hasina’s government fell in the face of a mass uprising after nearly 15 and a half years in power.
Following the premier’s resignation, the president dissolved the parliament on Aug 6.
When the Awami League came into power after winning the 2008 national elections, Mohammad Abdul Hamid was appointed as the speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad.
However, following the death of former president Zillur Rahman towards the end of the ninth parliament, Hamid was elected as the president of Bangladesh, leaving the speaker’s seat vacant.
Shirin, who came to the legislature for the first time in her service, capitalised on her four years of experience and became the presiding officer of the parliament.
She has been serving in the role of speaker since.
