A youth has been sentenced to prison for seven years over hurting religious sentiments through a Facebook post in Sylhet.
Sylhet Cyber Tribunal Judge Abul Kashem announced the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.
At the same time, he had been fined Tk1 lakh.
Sources said a person filed a case under the Information Technology Act at Zakiganj police station on June 5, 2017, accusing the young man of insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on Facebook. In this regard, the accused was arrested in a police operation and kept in jail.
Confirming the matter, acting public prosecutor (PP) of the cyber tribunal Mostafa Delwar Al Azhar said that a screenshot of a derogatory post from the accused’s Facebook ID was circulated on the social media. After that, various areas including Sylhet became heated in protest.
The court sentenced him to seven years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk1 lakh as his guilt was proved on the basis of forensic report and witness testimony. Later he was sent to jail, he added.
