Three Angles Marine occupies canals, river to build factory

Cabinet Division of Bangladesh has issued a directive to recover the land encroached by Three Angles Marine Lee Ltd Company.

Three Angles Marine Lee Ltd occupying Meghna, the main river of Bangladesh and its tributary river Fuldi and two canals in Munshiganj has set up a factory.

In pandemic there was no eviction drive against river occupation while without any hindrance the company occupied rivers-land.

Through this river area including rice all goods transported to govt warehouse.

The company has ruined the surrounding environment at rivers landside where farmers used to get three times crops but now they are getting only one time crop.

The drainage system of the area has been completely destroyed. The company has constructed several multi-storey buildings in place of the canal.

The existence of the two canals in the satellite image of 2017 does not exist in the current image.

In 2019, Deputy Commissioner of Munshiganj sent a list of river occupants to National River Commission. Three Angle Marine Ltd. was mentioned as the top occupant.

In 2010, Three Angles bought a few acres of privately owned land in Daulatpur area of Gazaria. But in the last two years, the company has become reckless and occupied rivers land and canals too.

The company has occupied more than 500 feet of Meghna River. Besides, half of the Fuldi River has been occupied and filled with sand.

Locals approached to High Court to take action against this occupying. On March 8, they appealed to the high court. The High Court issued a rule on Munshiganj DC, Upazila Parishad Chairman and Assistant Commissioner (VM).

The rule has been issued to find out why the construction of illegal establishments on public and private lands should not be seen as a failure. Although the rule was supposed to be answered within the next four weeks, those concerned have not yet responded.

Meanwhile, Three Angle Ltd. has not only occupied the river, but also the land of the local people. The company has even deeded land in the name of the deceased.

Manjal Haque said, 36 percent of his land was occupied within Three Angles. Suddenly he sees his land being filled with sand. When he went to protest, he was told that they had bought the land from his mother Suryaban Bibi. Suryaban Bibi registered this land in 2011. But locals and son Manjal Haque said Suryaban Bibi died in 2004. There are many more such allegations against the organization.

Lokman Hossain, an official of the company said, ‘‘We have not occupied the river in any way. It is the responsibility of the administration to see if we have done so.’’

Regarding the occupation of private land, he said, there is a lot of adulteration with land in Bangladesh. It is not possible to see many times. We did not seize knowingly any person’s land. Regarding the occupation of the canal, Lokman Hossain said, ‘‘There is no record of the canal among the lands here.’’
