Three-wheeler driver held for killing man in Cumilla

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday arrested a three-wheeler driver from Cumilla in connection with his alleged involvement in killing a man following a brawl over charging extra fares during the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays in Munshiganj.

The arrestee was Zakir Hossain, 50, son of Hamid of Sirajdikhan upazila in Munshiganj district.

Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in Naiar Bazar of Daudkandi upazila in Cumilla district and arrested Zakir in the early hours of Thursday.

Mukta Dhar, special superintendent of police, in a press briefing held at CID headquarters said police recovered the body of Ali Hossain Dewan, 52, son of Jabbar Dewan from Isapur in Sirajdikhan upazila in Munshiganj on May 5.

During the investigation, police came to know that Ali hired the vehicle, owned by Zakir, to go to Lalbari Bridge from the Isapura intersection.

When they reached the designated place, Zakir demanded extra fare from Ali on the occasion of Eid. At one stage both engaged into a heated argument around 10:50 pm. Later, Zakir beat him up mercilessly.

After some time, Zakir called another driver and both beat Ali up, leaving him dead.

Victim’s wife Minara Begum lodged a complaint with Sirajdikhan Police and police later registered an FIR over  the crime.

During interrogation, Zakir confessed to his involvement in the killing.
