Trawler sinks in sea: 8 fishermen missing, 4 rescued

Eight fishermen are missing after a fishing trawler named FB Mae Doa sank in the Bay of Bengal after being hit by Cyclone Midhili. Four other fishermen managed to board another trawler after three hours at sea.

The four rescued fishermen reached Mahipur ghat in Patuakhali on Saturday morning. They are Noor Zaman Munshi, Masum Mia, Azgar Mia and Rajib.

The missing fishermen are – Abul Kalam, Md. Zafar, Mojibur Rahman, Trawler Malik Yusuf, Chattar Howladar, Nadeem, Bellal and Yashin. All their houses are in Patharghata of Barguna.

Yakub Ali, the owner of the trawler and the brother of the missing fisherman Yusuf, said that last Tuesday, 12 fishermen including the trawler went to the sea for fishing. The trawler sank due to Cyclone Midhili on Friday afternoon.

Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, President of Barguna District Fishery Trawler Owners Association, said that the missing fishermen are being searched for.

Patharghata Station Commander of Coast Guard Southern Zone Lt. Saqib Mehbub said the Coast Guard is on patrol after the cyclone. The families of the missing fishermen are being contacted.
