The ruling Awami League on Monday started distribution of nomination letters among party’s candidates for the parliamentary elections scheduled for January 7.
The letter distribution programme was launched from the party president’s political office in Dhanmondi.
On Sunday the party unveiled the names of its 298 candidates for the counyry’s 12th parliament. Candidates for two other seats Kushtia-2 and Narayanganj-5 are yet to be announced.
On behalf of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, party general secretary Obaidul Quader inaugurated this programme.
Quader collected his nomination letter as the second person.
Then Awami League presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, joint general secretary Hasan Mahmud, AFM Bahauddin Nashim, organizing secretary SM Kamal Hossain, Abu Saeed Al Mahmud Swapan, Afzal Hossain, agriculture and cooperative affairs secretary Faridur Nahar Laili and most of the candidates of the central committee collected nomination letters.
After receiving the letter, Bahauddin Nashim said, ‘We are working to continue the democratic process of Bangladesh. I will try to fulfill people’s expectations. I am honoured to be nominated.’
Afzal Hossain, who was nominated for Patuakhali-1 constituency, said, ‘I have been nominated again in the 12th parliamentary elections. I express my gratitude to Bangabandhu’s daughter. I will work for the people.”
Nomination letters have been collected for national team cricketer Shakib Al Hasan. Besides, Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan, former Railway Minister Mujibul Haque, ICT State Minister Junaid Ahmed Palak have collected party nomination letters.
Party insiders said that the nomination letters of most of the party’s candidates have been collected by 2 pm.
On the occasion of the distribution of nomination letters of Awami League, the party’s MP candidates gathered in front of the Dhanmondi office with a large number of workers and supporters from Monday morning.
Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) has 300 elected seats. It has 50 other seats reserved exclusively for women who are chosen by the members elected through popular vote.
