Jatiya Party Chairman Golam Mohammad (GM) Quader has been made the leader of the opposition in parliament.
To this effect, the Parliament Secretariat issued a notification on Sunday.
Jatiya Party’s Co-Chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud has been made the deputy leader of the opposition in parliament.
Speaker ShirinSharmin Chaudhury recognised Quader, the Rangpur-3 MP, as leader of the opposition and Anisul, the Chattogram-5 MP, as deputy leader of the opposition according to the rules of procedure of the National Parliament, the according to the notification.
The Awami League has formed the government for its fourth straight term after winning an absolute majority in the 12th parliamentary elections this year.
The ruling party won 223 out of 299 seats in the January 7 elections, while the rest went to independent candidates (62), Jatiya Party (11), Workers Party (1), Kalyan Party (1) and JaSad (1).
The 2014 polls, which also faced boycotts by the BNP and allies, saw a turnout of 40.04% while the last elections joined by the both AL and BNP camps drew 80.02% turnout.
The lowest turnout in the country’s electoral history was in the February 1996 elections, boycotted by Awami League, with only 26.74%
Besides, 28 candidates boycotted the national polls bringing allegations like fake voting, polling station capture, and restricting agents from entering the centres.
Both 10th and 11th parliamentary polls were marred by widespread violence, claiming lives of at least 18 people on each occasion. This time the toll stood at two.
Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, the world’s longest serving female prime minister, has secured a landslide triumph in the 12th JatiyaSangsad polls from her home constituency Gopalganj-3.
The election for one seat has been postponed due to the death of an independent candidate contesting this seat on Dec 29 last year.
