No polls without Khaleda, Tarique, caretaker govt: BNP

BNP chairperson’s adviser and former opposition chief whip Zainul Abedin Faruk has said no election can be held in Bangladesh without Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman and a caretaker government.

“No matter how many times Obaidul Quader and Hasan Mahmud say the BNP’s back is against the wall… if necessary, we will sacrifice our lives, go to jail, but there will be no election in Bangladesh without Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman and a caretaker government,” said the BNP leader.

He made the remarks in front of the National Press Club on Friday at a human chain formed by Jatiya  Swecchasebak Dal’s Dhaka North unit.

“The Government cannot suppress us with a few policemen. Seventeen people have sacrificed their lives so far. If necessary, 17,000 more will sacrifice their lives… But there will be no more elections in the country under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”

He also commented that the Awami League will be defeated by Tarique Rahman’s strategy.

Zainul Abedin further said: “We trusted the Awami League in 2018. We met and had tea with them at Ganabhaban. We were sincere, but on that day you (Awami League) treated our party with hypocrisy. You stole votes at night.

“That day is no more; Tarique Rahman is leading us now. Insha Allah, you will be defeated by his strategy. I believe that no matter how many tricks, no matter how many conspiracies, you cannot stand in front of the BNP.”

Stating that the government is planning to destroy the media, Zainul Abedin said the government has arrested Prothom Alo journalist Samsuzzaman Shams and filed a case against Editor Motiur Rahman.

“Through this, you are giving proof or message to journalists, ‘Do not write [against us] anymore, we (Awami League) will surely come to power.’ I will say directly, this strategy of yours will not work against the BNP.”
