The San Jose Earthquakes, off to the worst start in their Major League Soccer history, dumped Argentine coach MatiasAlmeyda on Monday after more than three seasons in the post.
The ‘Quakes, 0-4 with three drawn for a league-worst three points from seven matches, appointed top developmental coach Alex Covelo as interim coach, with former MLS stars Steve Ralston and Chris Wondolowski serving as interim assistants.
“Matias has given everything he has to our club and we recognize the efforts he made,” Earthquakes managing partner John Fisher said.
Almeyda, 48, went 31-42 with 25 drawn in his tenure but San Jose made the playoffs only once since his arrival from Chivas of Mexico.
“He has been a true professional and brought his full effort to every training session and match. Despite those efforts, we have not gotten the results that we or he wanted,” Earthquakes general manager Chris Leitch said.
“There’s still a lot of soccer to be played this season and we believe that we have a roster that can compete for the playoffs.”
