South Africa enforced the follow-on after bundling Bangladesh out for 159 after lunch on the third day of the second Test in Chittagong’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Thursday.
Mominul Haque (82) and Taijul Islam (30) put up some resistance with a 103-run ninth-wicket partnership before Mominul got dismissed to remain stranded on 13 Test centuries, including seven in the port city.
The Tigers’ highest Test centurion, Mominul struck eight fours and a couple of sixes in his 112-ball knock while Taijul faced 95 deliveries before departing as the last wicket to fall.
Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada wreaked havoc on the Tigers’ batting line-up, reducing them to 48/8 before the mini-fightback of Mominul and Taijul, two among only three double digit scorers in a sorry Bangladesh display.
The visitors, who posted a mammoth first innings total of 575/6 declared, lead by 416 runs.
Bangladesh resumed at 38/4 but Rabada struck in the fourth over with a cracking delivery that captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto, on nine, could only edge to wicket-keeper Kyle Verreynne.
Mushfiqur Rahim went without scoring when Dane Paterson induced him to pop up a simple catch to Tony de Zorzi at short leg to leave Bangladesh 47/6.
That soon became 48/8 when Rabada struck twice in one over as Mehedi Hasan Miraz (one) was caught behind and debutant Mahidul Islam Ankon offered no shot to ball nipping back and was trapped leg before wicket for a duck.
The burst gave Rabada his second five-wicket haul of the series, to go with his 6/46 in the first Test victory in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
South Africa had three batsmen hit maiden Test centuries in their first innings 575 – De Zorzi (177), Tristan Stubbs (106) and Wiaan Mulder (105 not out).
South Africa are looking to sweep the two-match series after winning the first Test by seven wickets.
Bangladesh have never won a Test against South Africa in 15 attempts.
South Africa will look to further boost its chances of reaching the World Test Championship final next year when it meets Sri Lanka and Pakistan in two tests at home starting in late November.
