Twin centuries from captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave hosts India a big lead at the end of the second day of the fifth and final Test of the series against England. In response to England’s 218 runs, Team India scored 473 runs for 8 wickets at the end of the second day in their first innings. India leads by 255 runs with 2 wickets in hand. Rohit scored 103 and Gill scored 110.
After winning the toss and batting in Dharamsala, England were bowled out for 218 runs on the first day. After that, India scored 135 runs for 1 wicket at the end of the day. Rohit was unbeaten on 52 and Gill on 26 runs.
From the start of the second day, Rohit and Gill completed the century in the last part of the first session by picking up runs easily against the England bowlers. Rohit completed his 12th Test century by playing 154 balls and Gill completed his fourth century by playing 137 balls.
Through this innings, Rohit became the owner of the third highest century in international cricket as an opener. Australia’s David Warner scored 49, India’s Sachin Tendulkar scored 45 and Rohit scored 43 as openers. Star batsman Rohit broke compatriot Sunil Gavaskar’s record for the highest fourth century against England as an opener.
England captain Ben Stokes broke the Rohit-Gill pair in the second over of the second session. Rohit scored 103 runs off 162 balls with 13 fours and 3 sixes.
Gill scored 110 off 150 balls with 12 fours and 5 sixes before falling to James Anderson in the next over. Rohit-Gill added 171 runs for the second wicket.
Devadut Padikkal and Sarfraz Khan increased India’s lead after Rohit-Gil returned to the team’s 279 runs. The duo added 97 runs off 132 balls for the fourth wicket. Sarfraz added 56 runs in 60 balls with 8 fours and 1 six in the pair and was dismissed by England spinner Shoaib Bashir.
Bashir’s third victim after his half-century was Padikkal’s 65 with 10 fours and 1 six.
Rabindra Jadeja and Dhruv Jurel scored 15 after Padikkal’s departure for the team’s 403 and Ravichandran Ashin, who came down to play his 100th Test, stopped empty-handed as India lost the eighth wicket for 428 runs.
Then Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah ended the day’s play with an unbroken stand of 45 runs for the ninth wicket. Playing 55 balls, Kuldeep is unbeaten on 27 and Bumrah on 19 runs. Bashir of England took 4 wickets for 170 runs.
