Russia claims to have thwarted Ukrainian drone attack

Russia claimed on Tuesday morning to have thwarted an overnight drone attack by Kyiv in the western Belgorod region bordering Ukraine.

“Tonight, an attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack using seven aircraft-type UAVs against targets on the territory of the Russian Federation was stopped,” the defence ministry said on Telegram.

“All Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted by air defence systems on duty over the territory of Belgorod region,” the ministry added without specifying the exact location of the attack or whether it caused any damage or injuries.

The governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said the city of Gubkin had come under attack by Ukrainian drones.

No casualties were reported, Gladkov said on Telegram, but four homes were damaged.

“Windows were broken, roofs, facades and fences were cut,” he said.

In recent months, Ukraine has ramped up drone attacks against Russian territory, mainly targeting border regions, but also the capital Moscow and the northern city of Saint Petersburg.

The deadliest such attack occurred in the regional capital of Belgorod on December 30, when 25 people were killed, some 100 wounded and several hundred others evacuated
