Tanzid 16th Bangladesh batter out for duck

Opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim failed to live up to the huge expectations of him after being fallen for a duck in his debut innings against Sri Lanka in Bangladesh’s first match in the Asia Cup today at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.

Tanzid, an Under-19 World Cup winning member, made his way to the national team, on the back of his blistering performance in the Emerging Asia Cup in which he was the side’s top run getter with, a strike rate above 100.

However, in his first International, he received a second-ball duck and became the 16th Bangladeshi batter to fall for a duck in his debut innings. A total of 23 Bangladesh batters failed to open the innings in their debut innings, but seven of them were unbeaten on 0.

Yasir Ali Chowdhury Rabbi was the last Bangladeshi cricketer to go out for naught. Shoriful Islam, a pacer was also on the list of players who are currently in the Bangladesh team.

Former Bangladesh captain Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, who served the national cricket team as manager and later became a BCB director, was the first Bangladesh batter to receive a duck in his maiden ODI in 1986.

Tanzid could play only two balls before falling for naught as he failed to judge the turn the offspinner Maheesh Theekshana got.

Captain Shakib Al Hasan, however, earlier said they would be okay with even Tanzid failing to live up to the expectations.

“Playing badly in two or three matches won’t prove that he is not good enough to stay here or even playing well won’t make him a very good player overnight. He is a very talented cricketer and is in the process.

That should be maintained,” Shakib said off Tanzid during an official press conference for Asia Cup in Dhaka a few days ago.
