Bangladesh needs to do more homework for BRICS

In a bid to delve into the strategic shift in Bangladesh’s foreign policy, a significant Policy Colloquium titled ‘Bangladesh’s Pivot Towards BRICS: Challenges and Interests’ was held at the Syndicate Hall of North South University (NSU), a press release said on Sunday. This event was organized by the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG), NSU. The meeting was moderated by Professor Sk. Tawfique M. Haque, Chair, Department of Political Science and Sociology & Director, South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG).

Distinguished experts and scholars converged for this thought-provoking discussion on Bangladesh’s possible engagement with BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), assessing the potential challenges and benefits inherent in this geopolitical pivot.

The panelists for the colloquium brought a diverse range of expertise to the table, ensuring a comprehensive examination of the topic. During the colloquium, each panelist contributed their unique insights and analysis, shedding light on different aspects of Bangladesh’s pivot towards the BRICS countries.

Professor Syed Mansoob Murshed of International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University, Hague, the Netherlands, provided a global geo-economic perspective on the implications of Bangladesh’s strategic shift, highlighting potential impacts on international economics and politics.

Professor Niaz Asadullah, Honorary Professorial Fellow, Department of Economics, North South University focused on the economic dimensions of the pivot, exploring trade, investment, and development opportunities that could arise from enhanced BRICS cooperation.

Dr. Lailufar Yasmin, Professor and Chairperson, Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka emphasized the significance of diplomatic engagements, regional stability, and the role of Bangladesh as a bridge between South Asia and the BRICS nations.

Professor Shahidul Haque, Professor, SIPG, North South University conducted a thorough analysis of the geopolitical implications of the pivot, considering regional power dynamics and potential adjustments in alliances.
