Sixty-six percent of students graduating from colleges affiliated with the National University are not getting jobs as per a recent survey.

Meanwhile, only 21 percent have attained a job following graduation or post-graduation from those institutes, according to a survey by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS).

The government research agency conducted the survey from February to June this year..

Among the graduates, 7 percent are still pursuing postgraduate or technical education in another subject while only 3 percent are taking initiatives by themselves to earn a living.

The telephone survey was conducted on undergraduate and post-graduate students of 54 government and private colleges of the country who finished their courses by 2017. 1.639 students, 202 heads of educational institutions and 202 job-holders from the 54 institutes participated in the survey.

According to the survey, the average salary of those who have gotten jobs after graduation is Tk 30,000. Of those who are unemployed, 62 percent are from departments other than the business administration.

BIDS researcher and the survey coordinator Minhaj Mahmud told reporters that 66 percent of students remain unemployed as it was not possible to ensure quality education in the colleges affiliated with the National University.

“Students need to be made proficient in information technology,” he said and suggested increasing investment in colleges.

Ninety-seven percent of students under the National University complained that they had not received any assistance from teachers or their institutions in landing a job after graduation.
