Bangladesh’s first ‘Women Winter Expedition’ in the Himalayas to begin

‘Women’s Winter Expedition,’ the first-of-its-kind mountain expedition for women in Bangladesh, is going to start soon.

The expedition, to be held in the Langtang Himalayas of Nepal, envisions reaching three mountain peaks — Naya Kanga Peak (5,844 metres), Baden-Powell Peak (5,857 metres), and Yala Peak (5,500 metres).

The expedition has been organized by ‘Abhijatri,’ an organisation for mountaineers, says a press release.

Bangladeshi mountaineer Nishat Mazumder is leading the expedition with the overall support of the international brand Mastercard. Other members of the team include mountaineers Yasmin Lisa, AP Talukder, Arpita Debnath and Tahura Sultana Rekha.

Among the mountaineers, two are experienced while the other two are trainee trekkers.

Bangladesh Liberation War Museum is also a partner in this initiative. To commemorate this occasion, a flag-hoisting ceremony was held on the Liberation War Museum premises on Friday.

The aim of this expedition is to celebrate the determination, imagination and courage of Bangladeshi women.

“Sultana’s Dream,” the renowned women empowerment literary work by Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, has been listed in the Memory of the World Regional Register for the Asia Pacific by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Inspired by this acclaimed literary work, Abhijatri has taken this initiative with the slogan ‘Sultana’s Dream Unbound.’
