An NGO named MPL Resource Institute has disappeared after snatching nearly crores of takas from bout four hundred poor customers in Raipur of Lakshmipur. This money has been collected from poor customers including vegetable sellers, domestic helpers, rickshaw pullers and fishermen in the Meghna district. On Monday afternoon, angry customers locked the gate of the company’s office in Khaserhat Bazar of North Charvanshi UP, at the expatriate Atiq Ullah Bhavan, behind the Jame Masjid, demanding a refund. On being informed about the incident, Raipur Police Station OC Yasin Farooq Majumdar immediately sent SI Sakhawat of Charbanshi UP’s Hajimara Fadi to the spot and pacified the customers.
The duped customers of North Charbanshi UP said that the accused NGO MPL Resource Institute has its head office in Motizil area of Dhaka, whose official registration number is 018056 and code number is 168. By opening a temporary office in Raipur’s North Charbanshi UP, the fraudulent company has cheated the customers by keeping savings of Tk 20, 25 and 30 thousand per book and giving Tk 1 to Tk 4 lakh as share.
Fisherman Babul Majhi said, today we were supposed to give loan on Monday. At 2 in the afternoon, I came to that office next to Khaserhat Bazar and saw that there was no one in the office. Taka 15-20-30-35 thousand taken from everyone in the name of depositing savings. I earn my living by catching fish in the river with great difficulty. I thought, I will keep money in the association and run a shop with loan. Now the association has fled with all the money. We want our money back and justice for them.
Housekeeper Najma Begum said, I will send my husband abroad. For this, I will deposit 35 thousand taka and take 4 lakh taka Loan. Now come to the office and see that they have run away with the money of many others including me. How will Loan pay 35 thousand taka and how will her husband go abroad? MPL Resource Institute cheated these poor customers from different areas of North Charvanshi UP like Najma, Momtaz, Marifa, Zakia, Baker Majhi and Babul Majhi. The customers are prepaloang to file a case against that loan donation organization at the police station.
Saudi expatriate Atiq’s brother Sourav, who owns the building behind the mosque in Khaserhat Bazar, said that he paid rent with the company’s official Habibur Rahman for 8,000 taka per month. They rented the house a month ago. But it was not known that he would lock and run away like this. Raipur police took the information from us.
The upazila manager of the accused company Habibur Rahman called several times (01814263173) but he did not receive it. Raipur Upazila Social Service Officer Mazharul Islam said he did not know anything about this.
Yasin Farooq Majumder, OC of Raipur Police Station, said that after learning about the incident, two SIs were immediately sent to the scene and the agitated customers were calmed down. If they file a case, it will be investigated and necessary action will be taken.
Raipur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Imran Khan said, no one has informed about this. Everyone will be asked to be careful at the NGO meeting. Action will be taken with inquiry.
