The government has completed a feasibility study recently to determine the current state of habitat connectivity through camera trapping, ensuring possible wildlife corridors.
The Wildlife Compensation Rules, 2021 have been formulated to resolve the confrontation between wildlife and human beings.
Md Shahab Uddin, minister for the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) said these while addressing a discussion meeting organised by the Forest Department on the occasion of World Wildlife Day 2022 with the theme “Recovering Key Species for Ecosystem Restoration” on Thursday.
Saber Hossain Chowdhury, chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the MoEFCC, and secretary to the ministry Md Mostafa Kamal were present at the discussion.
Sheikh Kamal Wildlife Center was established in 2019 in Gazipur with the aim of creating trained and skilled manpower for conducting quality research activities for proper management of wildlife and biodiversity.
A red list of threatened species has been prepared after assessing the condition of 1,619 species of wildlife in Bangladesh, the environment minister said.
He also noted that the government has declared 51 areas as protected areas for the conservation and development of wildlife habitat. The Wildlife Crime Control Unit is working to prevent wildlife trafficking and control crime.
“We have to work in a coordinated manner to protect the wildlife of the country including elephants and tigers,” the minister added.
Two areas of the country have been declared as safe areas for vultures in 2014 to protect endangered Bengal vultures, he also mentioned.
